Text: Exodus 14: 5-22
Who is this God? Who is ‘I am who I am’?
A. The God who wants to be known
Personally, we get to know people:
1. Through observation
2. Through getting information
3. Through experience
4. Through having a relationship with them
These ways are alike in knowing God. We get to know God more when we experience His grace, encounter Him personally and build an intimate relationship with Him.
For hundreds of years, the Israelites worked for the Egyptians as slaves. Pharaoh acted as their god and led them. They were even exposed to a place where a lot of idols were worshiped. Yet, how did they know about Yahweh?
God revealed himself to them. The Israelites were the ones who experienced actual miracles. They saw how God mightily used Moses in leading them.
However, the Israelites neglected the power of God, and who He really was. They wanted to go back to Egypt despite knowing the Promise Land.
Sadly, we are like the Israelites sometimes. We choose what we want than what God wants for us. We rely on our own efforts than trusting Him fully with our lives.
What happens when we don’t know?
1. We worry and fret. We become anxious
2. We grumble
3. We are uncomfortable
4. We depend on what we know
The plagues that occurred during Moses’ time actually revealed how strong God was. He was introducing himself. He wanted us to know that He is the great ‘I am’.
“Moses said to the people, “Do not fear! Stand firm and see the salvation of the Lord that he will provide for you today; for the Egyptians that you see today you will never, ever see again. The Lord will fight for you, and you can be still.”
B. The God who is with His people
“Now the Lord was going before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them in the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel day or night. He did not remove the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night from before the people.”
God provided what the Israelites needed from the pillar of cloud by day to the pillar of fire by night. God was with them all the time. Yet, the Israelites focused unto their fears than with the power of God.
Who is this God?
Do you remember when Moses was asking God what should he tell the Israelites?
God said, “I am who I am.”
“God said to Moses, “I am who I am .” And he said, “You must say this to the Israelites, ‘I am has sent me to you.'”
They knew that God saved them from the Egyptians who acted as gods before them.
They feared the Lord, and believed in His miracles.
How about us?
1. God wants us to get to know Him.
2. He wants us to experience Him.
3. He is God with us.
4. We have to be still and know that He is God.
God wants us to have a relationship with him. He revealed himself through Jesus Christ. He wants to restore the relationship that was broken due to sin.
What is our Egypt? We have to surrender it to God. Let us not be similar to the Israelites who wanted to go back to Egypt instead of moving forward to the Promise land.
Allow God to control our hearts. Let us have the desire in getting to know Him more as we journey through this life. He knows the desires of our hearts. Let us keep on desiring Him more.
More of Jesus.
