National University (NU) President Nilo Ocampo accepts the lead on hosting UAAP season 75 from Ateneo de Manila’s Ricky Palou.
“Together with the UAAP Board of Trustees, we applaud and congratulate Ateneo for going all out, with all their hearts for their successful hosting of the 74th season,” said Ocampo during the UAAP Season 74 Closing Ceremonies. “And I look forward to a great year ahead, keeping in mind the upholding of the ideals of UAAP. We will achieve to keep the UAAP spirit alive and strong,” he added.
In a press conference held at the SMX Convention Center last year, NU Athletics Director Junel Baculi said that National U gave up this season’s UAAP hosting to Ateneo to have the chance in hosting season 75 at the Mall of Asia Arena, which is reportedly patterned after the Atlanta Hawks’ Philips Arena.
“We want students and schools to take part in the action. We don’t want to limit the excitement to the players,” said Baculi.
Moreover, NU announced that majority of the elimination round games as well as basketball games will be held at the 20,000-seater venue.
Currently, the arena is 85 percent complete and will be officially opened in May.
“I was advised by (SM boss) Mr. Hans Sy that the arena will be finished by April and we plan to hold the games there, said Baculi during a PSA Forum.
The said venue is expected to rival the 15,000-seat dome -shaped Smart Araneta Coliseum which was built in 1958.
